But understanding how investment tax laws work is essential to making smart decisions with your money. With the right knowledge, you'll be able to maximize your investments and enjoy increased financial freedom. So let's take a look at some of the basics of investment tax laws!

The Basics of Investment Taxation

Investment taxes are taxes that are applied to investments such as stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and other securities. Generally speaking, there are three main types of investment taxes: capital gains tax, dividend tax, and interest income tax. Let's take a look at each one in more detail.

Capital Gains Tax

Capital gains taxes are applied when an investor sells an investment for more than what they paid for it. The difference between what was paid for the investment (the cost basis) and what it was sold for (the sale price) is known as the capital gain or loss. If the amount realized from the sale is greater than the cost basis, then a capital gains tax will be due on this amount. The rate at which capital gains taxes are applied varies depending on how long the asset was held before being sold (long-term gains typically have lower rates).

Dividend Tax

Dividends refer to payments made by a company to its shareholders out of its profits or reserves. Dividend payments may come in the form of cash payments or shares of stock known as "stock dividends". When dividends are received, they must be reported as taxable income on an individual's tax return and are subject to taxation according to their marginal income tax rate.

Interest Income Tax

Interest income refers to any money earned from interest payments on investments such as bonds or bank accounts paying interest. Interest income must be reported as taxable income on an individual's tax return and is subject to taxation according to their marginal income tax rate just like any other type of ordinary income.

Taxable Accounts vs. Tax-Advantaged Accounts

The first thing you need to know about investment taxes is that there are two types of accounts - taxable accounts and tax-advantaged accounts. Taxable accounts refer to any type of account where you are taxed on any gains or losses incurred, such as stocks or mutual funds held outside of a retirement account. On the other hand, tax-advantaged accounts refer to any type of account where you are not taxed on gains or losses until the money is withdrawn from the account, such as 401(k)s, IRAs, and Roth IRAs.

Tax Benefits & Losses

Finally, it's important to understand the various tax benefits available for investing in certain types of assets as well as how losses can be used to offset taxable income in some cases. For example, if you invest in municipal bonds (also known as muni-bonds), then your income from these bonds may be excluded from federal taxation depending on where they are issued. Additionally, if an asset has lost value during a given year, then up to $3K worth of losses can be used against regular income for that same year - though anything over $3K must be carried over into future years until all losses have been accounted for.

Conclusion

Understanding how investment taxes work is key when it comes to making smart decisions with your money. Knowing when you may owe capital gains taxes or how much you need to report in dividends can help you optimize your returns while minimizing your overall burden from taxation so that you can enjoy greater financial freedom from your investments! Hopefully this overview has been helpful in giving you a better understanding of investment taxes so that you can make more informed decisions about where and when to invest your money!

Investing Strategies for Beginners - How to Make the Most of Your Money

Let's discuss ways that beginners can start investing with minimal risk and get the most out of their money. An index fund is a type of mutual fund that tracks a particular market index - such as the S&P 500 or Dow Jones Industrial Average – meaning it holds a collection of stocks that track those indexes. This type of investing is low-risk since it doesn’t require any active trading and because it diversifies investments across many different companies. Additionally, since index funds tend to have lower costs than other types of mutual funds due to their passive nature, investing in index funds often outperform actively managed mutual funds in terms of returns over time. This helps spread out your risk and ensures that you won’t lose all your money if one company performs poorly.

Stocks

If you’re looking for higher returns then investing in stocks may be a good option for you. This popular investment strategy is a little more risky though so do your own research before getting started. Buying stocks in the stock market gives investors ownership in individual companies and allows them to benefit from their success over time. Stocks can be bought in the stock market through an online broker or even directly from certain companies themselves if they offer direct purchase plans (which some do). It’s important to understand the stock market before jumping in though since buying stocks can involve significant risk depending on which stocks you choose and how volatile they are.

Bonds

Bonds are another popular way to invest money safely while still getting good returns; however unlike stocks, bonds represent loans rather than ownership in a company. When someone buys a bond they essentially lend money to either a company or government entity that then pays back interest over time until the loan is repaid in full at maturity date (the date when the loan has been fully paid off).

ETFs & Mutual Funds

Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and mutual funds are other popular investments for beginners since they allow investors to buy into a diversified portfolio with just one purchase instead of having to pick individual stocks/bonds themselves. ETFs track an index such as the S&P 500 while mutual funds typically follow an actively managed strategy by investing in many different types of securities such as stocks, bonds, commodities etc... Both types of investments have advantages/disadvantages so make sure to do your research before deciding which is right for you.

No matter what your needs or goals, budget, and/or risk tolerance are as an investor there is probably an investing strategy out there that suits you best - it just takes some research and understanding of different options available before jumping into anything too quickly!

Index funds are great if you want safety with minimal risk while stocks allow investors ownership in individual companies with potentially higher returns over time. It doesn’t have to be complicated! Here are some tips for using your credit card responsibly and building a strong financial future.

Education is power! Get to know this tool really well to properly utilize them.

Get Educated

The first step is understanding how credit cards work and learning about the different types of cards available. A credit card is a tool in your toolbox to help build towards your financial goals. Make sure you understand the difference between interest rates, annual fees, rewards points, and other features that may come with your card. Take advantage of resources like blogs and forums for more in-depth knowledge about the ins and outs of credit cards. That way, you can make an informed decision when choosing a card that best fits your needs.

Set A Budget and Stick To It

The first step in using credit cards responsibly is setting a budget and sticking to it. This means knowing exactly how much money you have available each month, and then making sure you don’t spend more than that amount. It also means being honest with yourself about what your needs are versus what your wants are; it’s easy to justify buying something when we really want it, but this isn’t always the best financial decision. Setting a budget and sticking to it will help keep your spending under control.

Pay More Than The Minimum Balance

Once you have set your budget, the next step is making sure that you pay more than the minimum balance on your credit card each month. If you only pay the minimum balance, you will accumulate interest charges over time which can add up quickly and leave you owing more money than before. Bringing you further and further away from your total credit limit. Paying more than the minimum balance each month will help ensure that your debt doesn't spiral out of control.

Be Aware Of Fees & Interest Rates

Finally, it is important to be aware of fees and interest rates associated with your credit card. Different cards have different fees and interest rates, so make sure to read through all of the fine print before signing up for a card. This way, you will know exactly what kind of fees and interest rates apply if you don't pay off your balance in full each month. Read your statement carefully. Your credit card statement can give you an idea of your credit limit and utilization rate. Being aware of these details can save you from getting into an unmanageable situation with debt down the line.

Track Your Spending

The key to responsible spending is tracking what you are buying with your credit card each month and making sure that it fits into your budgeted amount. You can use an app or online program like Mint or Quicken to help keep track of what you are spending each month so that you don't go overboard on non-essential items or miss any payments due dates. This will also help ensure that all charges are accurate so if there is ever an issue with incorrect billing statements or fraudulent charges, it will be easier for the creditor to investigate and resolve them quickly. Plus, tracking your spending gives you insight into areas where extra savings could be made so that more money can be put toward other important goals such as saving for retirement or paying off debt quicker.

Using credit cards responsibly is essential for managing both short-term and long-term finances. With the right approach, managing credit cards can actually help build a strong financial future instead of being a source of stress or worry in your life. By following these tips and taking charge of your finances today, you’re one step closer to achieving financial success tomorrow!

Credit Repair: Should You Bother and Is It Really Worth It?

Credit repair isn't a quick or easy process, but it does have the potential for being very rewarding if you take your time and do things right.

Debt Free

Education

Financial Freedom

Personal Finance

Credit Repair

Carlo

When it comes to credit repair, there are a lot of myths and misconceptions regarding credit repair floating around. If you've done any searching, you've undoubtedly come across a seemingly endless supply of articles and ads promising quick and easy fixes on credit repair. But the truth is, credit repair isn't a quick or easy process. Remember, it takes time, effort, and a lot of patience to repair credit.

That being said, the effort you put into repairing your credit is worth it. A good credit score can save you thousands of dollars in interest over the life of a loan, and it can also mean the difference between getting approved for a loan or being denied.

Credit repair isn't just about improving your credit score; however, it's also about fixing errors that are being reported. Before you roll up your sleeves and get to work, let's go over what your credit score is and how it's calculated.

What Is a Credit Score?

Your credit score represents how risky you are to lend to. Based on that risk, lenders offer higher rates on lower credit scores, while higher credit scores benefit from lower rates.

Credit scores range from 300 to 850 and are calculated using information from your credit report.

To know where to begin repairing your credit, take a look at what makes up a credit score so you can focus on the right areas:

Credit Payment history (35%)

Credit utilization (30%)

Length of credit history (15%)

Types of credit accounts (10%)

New credit accounts (10%)

How Can You Repair Your Credit on Your Own?

There are several things you can do to fix or repair your credit. The first step is to review a copy of your credit report, so you know where you stand. Along with fixing items that already exist on your credit report, you can repair your credit by taking positive steps going forward.

1. Review your credit report for errors and dispute any inaccuracies. Yes, mistakes happen.

2. Make all of your payments on time - all of them. Although you can't change the fact that you may have late or missed payments in your credit history, you can focus on making all payments on time from now on.

3. Keep your balances low on revolving loans (credit cards).

4. Focus on paying down your debt.

5. Don't apply for new credit unless you truly need it.

6. If you're renting right now, is it time to buy or continue renting? So, when it comes to your next home or property, you'll likely have to choose between the cost of renting or buying. Of course, there are pros and cons to both options to factor in. To help you make the best decision for your situation, here are 5 things you should know before deciding whether to rent or buy your next home.

1. How Much Can You Afford and your Credit Score?

How much house can you afford is maybe the most important question to ask yourself before making a decision. Take a close look at your monthly budget and figure out how much you can afford to spend each month on housing and other things like maintenance, and property tax. Then, compare that number to the average cost of rent or a home mortgage in your desired area. Let's not forget closing costs. Closing costs are a big expense to remember and it's not just the monthly debt payments.

The next question is what is your credit score and debt to income ratio. This is a large factor and directly affects you buying a house since it can impact paying debt monthly. Mortgage lenders will keep a close eye on this one.

If buying is going to stress you out financially, then it's probably not the right option for you. On the other hand, if you're able to swing these homeownership costs, then it might be worth considering.

2. How Long Do You Plan on Staying in the Area?

Are you planning on moving soon? If so, then renting might be the better option than buying a house since you won't have to worry about homeownership and selling a house before you move. On the other hand, if you plan on staying put for at least a few years, then buying could make more sense since you'll have time to build equity in your home.

3. Are You Ready for the Responsibilities of Homeownership?

Owning a home comes with a lot of responsibility. Not only will you have a mortgage payment each month, but you'll also be responsible for things like yard work, maintenance costs and payments, property taxes, insurance property taxes, and house or property repairs. Don't forget there are the unplanned issues and come maintenance time it might not always work out for your current monthly expenses. If you're not ready to take on those homeownership responsibilities, then renting might be the better option for now.

4. What Kind of Lifestyle Do You Want?

Do you want the freedom to decorate and make changes to your living space? Do you like to customize your house or living space? Or do you prefer not having to worry about those things related to homeownership? If having more freedom and control over your living situation is important to you, then owning might be the way to go. However, if you'd rather not deal with those hassles, then renting could be a better fit.

5. What Are Your Priorities?

Ultimately, only YOU can decide whether renting or buying is right for your next home or property. It all comes down to what's most important to YOU and YOUR family. So, sit down and make a list of your priorities - financial stability, freedom and flexibility, low maintenance, etc. - and use that list to guide your decision-making process.

There's no right or wrong answer when it comes to deciding whether to rent or buy your next home. Some people say that renting waste money but it all depends on what's most important to YOU and YOUR family. Use this list of 5 things to consider as a starting point in your decision-making process and make a list of pros and cons and you'll be sure to end up in a place and with a property that's just right for YOU!

Guide to Getting started with a Roth IRA

You don't have to be in your 20s or 30s anymore to start investing! The good news is that you don't have to be in your 20s or 30s anymore to start investing, which means there's no excuse not to start saving now! If you're one of these folks who want to learn more about Roth IRAs — or just generally interested in how it can help you build wealth for retirement — we've got all the answers you need here. This post covers everything from eligibility requirements and contributions limits to withdrawal restrictions and other benefits (like tax-free growth).

What is a Roth IRA?

A Roth IRA is a retirement savings account funded with after-tax dollars. This means that the money you contribute comes from your paycheck and is not directly taxed by the government. You can open a Roth IRA at any age, and there are no income restrictions on who can contribute to one (though there are limits on how much you can contribute annually).

While many other types of retirement accounts involve tax benefits (and often penalties), Roth IRAs are different in that they don't provide any tax breaks up front—but they also don't penalize you once you reach a certain age or withdrawal threshold like 401(k)s do. In fact, when it comes time for tax season, you'll find yourself with more money in your pocket if your Roth IRA has grown substantially over the years because all withdrawals remain free from federal taxes—even those made before age 59 1/2.

Getting started with a Roth IRA is easier than you think.

Who is eligible for a Roth IRA?

Anyone with earned income can contribute to a Roth IRA. It's easier than you might think to get beyond the "living paycheck to paycheck" lifestyle that even wealthy American families tend to embody. You can build a savings, live below your means, and eventually have a growing net worth, safety net, and nest egg with just a few smart choices.

Building your wealth isn't just for the already wealthy or the lucky success story. It's a strategy, and anyone can get started. Here are ten methods anyone can use to start building wealth right now.

1.	Start Your "Just Got Paid" Savings Account

First: Open a savings account. Look for the best percentage returns you can find with your current banking options and credit score. The more returns you get, the more you will be rewarded for building and not spending your savings year on year.

Call this the "Just Got Paid" savings account, because that's when you'll be putting money in. The best time to save is right after you get paid and before you have a chance to spend or allocate the surplus.

Drop the same amount into your savings every paycheck, then anything leftover before your next paycheck as well and you'll see your savings steadily grow.

2.	Focus On Your Next Career Move

The key to growing wealth starts with a job that pays more than your living expenses. Most people start near the bottom of the salary range, so the natural next step is to work your way up.

Set your eye on the prize. What is your next promotion? Are there skills that could multiply your potential hourly income? Choose your next move up and begin making plans to get that higher-paying position.

3.	Steadily Pay Off Debts

The lower your debts, the greater your wealth. Reducing and eliminating debts is one of the best ways to launch your personal debt building. Fewer debts will also empower your ability to borrow and build your credit score. Consolidate your debts or seek resolutions with each of your creditors to pay less than the full amount.

4.	Cut and Eliminate Expenses

Those who successfully build wealth do so by creating surplus. Trim your streaming subscriptions, stop buying coffee you don't care about, bring your lunch to work, and find clothing brands that last longer in good quality. The less you spend, the more you save, and the more you can invest in wealth-growing strategies.

5.	Employer-Matching Retirement Contributions

Employer-matching retirement contribution is one of the best wealth-growing strategies available to the average employee. That is free money to enjoy in your retirement for every dollar (up to the limit) that you pre-tax contribute. For a long-term wealth strategy, employer matching is not a perk to be ignored.

6.	Invest in a Guaranteed Fund

Dip your toe in the stock market by purchasing shares in a few funds that are guaranteed to make gains. Funds, like mutual funds, are actually grouped portfolios that offer the gains from the total portfolio to the shareholders of the fund. In other words, someone else manages a successful stock portfolio, and you buy a slice of the action.

7.	Profit From Your Free Time

Whatever you do for fun, find a way to profit from it. Sell your handicrafts on Etsy, or take Uber passengers if you relax by driving the city. Volunteer at the shelter if you're an animal person, or walk dogs to get paid to take long afternoon walks. There are tons of fun recreational activities with a potential for income these days.

8.	Ask for Money and Stocks Instead of Gifts

If you're really focused on wealth-building, rope in your friends and family. Ask only for cash and stocks for the next few Birthdays and Christmases. This message works especially well if you explain that you are saving for something big - like a wedding or a house - where everyone will feel like they're pitching in for one really big present.

9.	Buy a House

Real estate is still a valuable investment, even with the crazy market recently. If you can find a good family home at a fair price in a strong local real estate market, the home's value will almost assuredly increase over time, and your personal wealth will increase with equity. Move in and save on housing costs or rent the property and become an investment landlord.

10.	Buy a Franchise

Do you know how Football players ensure they remain wealthy after they retire from sports? They buy restaurant and retail franchises. You're likely one of the many potential investors who have a myriad of questions over how to invest and whether cryptocurrencies are a safe investment. In just a few years, the digital currency trend has taken over the world, leading to the scramble for a piece of the pie.

Undeniably, some investors have made a fortune from Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, which are forecasted to be worth $2.73 billion in 2025. However, this doesn't mean there haven't been any risks involved. One major risk factor with trading in cryptocurrencies is market volatility, where the value is up one day, then it plummets the next. This is similar to how stocks fare, depending on how a company performs.

Despite the speculations attached to cryptos, you should consider adding them to your portfolio to diversify and earn potential returns. Some experts predict that cryptocurrencies will continue to play a major role in how people make payments in 50 years, given that plans for regulations are underway.

Before venturing into your cryptocurrency journey, there are a few things you should know:

1. Educate Yourself on How Cryptocurrencies Work

The first step is to do your homework on cryptocurrency investing. It's similar to research done on a company before buying the shares. You should also understand the different forms of cryptocurrencies, their features, and how they work. Unlike shares that are backed by a company, cryptocurrencies tend to flow with the attitude of the market. You can check out the many resources available to polish your knowledge, such as All Crypto Whitepapers for well-informed investing.

2. Learn About the Risks

Bitcoin, which is the trailblazer for all other cryptos, began 2021 with a 70% market share before drastically falling to less than 40%. This tells you that investing in cryptocurrencies doesn't always guarantee profits. What also adds to the risk level is cryptocurrency technologies that haven't been fully developed to support investors to make their money. Further, the possibility of regulation could impact the value. Overall, the volatility of crypto markets requires that you take more caution and be on the lookout for any changes in the market.

3. Diversification Is Key

Never put all your cryptocurrencies in one place to avoid losing your hard-earned money. To achieve a balanced crypto-asset allocation, experts generally recommend investing in two ways. One way is to buy coins from different use cases as each coin serves a different use. The other way is to diversify the cryptocurrency according to the project location, such as a country that is crypto-friendly.

4. Figure Out How Much to Invest

As a beginner, try and choose a more stable coin such as Bitcoin, and put in an amount of money you won't lose sleep over. The good thing is that you can start with as little as $5 to $10 to have a feel of being a cryptocurrency investor. Also, choose the best platforms for buying and selling cryptos, such as Coinbase, Gemini, Crypto.com, and Kraken.

5. Plan Your Investment Strategy

In addition, whether you're in for the short or long haul, make sure to have a strategy in place to increase your chances of making a profit. From the get-go, have a good mix of storage. Experts prefer you keep a higher percentage of your cryptocurrency in cold storage- an offline wallet- for better security. Hot storage, which is an online wallet, comes in handy when you need to make a quick trading move.

Another strategy generally recommended is buy-and-hold, which suits a long-term investor. This helps control any emotional decisions after reading a few tweets on crypto trends. In addition, if you're very risk-averse, consider the dollar-cost averaging method, where you buy in small incremental amounts as opposed to a lump sum.

Key Takeaway

While experts may offer good points on how the cryptocurrency market is going, no one can accurately predict the future. As an investor, you have more say over how you want to use your money and the risk you can take. As a whole, being a beginner, it's important to take measured steps and not assume you will have the same experience as the next investor. Otherwise, start small and watch over your investments.

At BillyHelp, we'll help you set the motion of being a smart investor by providing easy-to-understand personal finance and investment information, including cryptocurrency. Staying fit and healthy is a habit; in the same way, saving and investing is a habit. Bad money habits will undoubtedly hold you back from living the best financial life. So, how do you make sure to take control of your finances whenever life gets in the way? The first step is to gradually develop a set of actions to establish a healthy relationship with your money.

5 Simple but Effective Money Tips to Start Today

1. Tackle Debt

Debt is a normal part of life and doesn't necessarily mean a person is bad with money. However, it can quickly spiral out of control, always taking a big chunk of your income. You can consider applying the debt snowball effect as a quick way to get rid of debt. It starts with listing and ranking all your credit card debt and outstanding loans from the smallest to the largest balance. The next step is to undertake paying off the smallest debt amounts until you're done before moving to the next debt. The key is to keep rolling over money allocated to pay the first debt into the next continually until you have a nil balance.

2. Build an Emergency Fund

An emergency fund comes in handy, especially if you're trying to avoid racking up credit card debt to buy your groceries. The extra cash covers any unexpected expenses such as unplanned car repairs or medical costs. It's recommended that you save three to six months of your living expenses. Depending on your income and lifestyle, start with any amount you're comfortable with. This can be as little as $100 and continue building to higher amounts. Since it's for emergencies, the funds have to be quickly accessible. It's advisable to put the money in a high yield savings account or money market fund.

3. Work With a Budget

Bad spending habits steal away your peace of mind. When you're on a budget, you'll be forced to track every dollar you spend when buying your groceries or paying for your monthly subscriptions. Create a budget that works for you and stick to it. You can try any of the multiple budgeting methods, such as a zero-based budget or the 50-30-20 rule. Review your spending every week or month and see if you're reaching your targets.

4. Have Clear Financial Goals

Begin today by spending your money with intention. When you have a clear goal, such as saving for retirement, buying a home, or planning for a holiday, you become actionable.

You can list down both short-term and long-term goals to help you better organize your finances. Let's say your short-term goal is to pay off all your credit card debt in one year. Every single day until year-end, you will try avoiding bad habits that derail your chances of being debt-free. If your long-term goal is to save for retirement, you will slowly become disciplined with your budget as you have envisioned your ideal future life. Saving money is not easy; that's why having an inspiration is important.

5. Invest in Your Health

Your health goes hand in hand with your finances. Poor health limits your ability to earn, save, and invest. It reduces your lifespan, so you can't enjoy the fruits of your hard work. In a 2016 study, it was found that an extra hour of sleep increased wages by 1.5% in the short term and 4.9% in the long term. Enough sleep improves your cognition and memory, which translates to improved productivity and likely better financial decisions.

Give priority to your health needs, such as buying quality and healthy food, signing up for health insurance, or subscribing to a fitness program. This lets you get value for your money. Also, safeguard your mental wellness for a better quality of life. Focusing on your health now insures you against a future of paying exorbitant medical bills after years of poor health habits.

Fix Your Money Habits

Healthy money habits don't happen overnight as you have to break away from bad patterns and preconceived notions about money. However, having a goal in mind and consistently following good spending and saving habits will get you to your desired financial position.

How about automating how you track your expenses? Knowing where your money goes makes sure you can spare extra funds to save and invest. You can try this with our app, which allows you to pay bills without delay and at your convenience.

How to Spend Your Paycheck Wisely

Do you earn a decent income, but it feels like you're living paycheck to paycheck? Or you've finally landed your first paycheck and are wondering where and how to spend it? If this possibly describes you, it's good to take a step back and reflect on how to take charge of your finances. The general rule of thumb most financial experts recommend is to save first, then spend later. However, if there's no clear plan, it can be tough to stick by this principle. If you want to keep more of your paycheck, here's what to do.

Effectively allocate and prioritize your paycheck

There's a popular budgeting strategy that can help you instill good spending habits. It's the 50-30-20 rule which guides you on how to allocate your paycheck. It simply involves dividing your after-tax income into three key areas-needs, wants and savings.

This type of budget is easy to create as you don't have to spend endless hours trying to plan your paycheck. You're also able to have a clear picture of where your money goes, allowing you to achieve your financial goals faster. Let's take a closer look.

Spend 50% of your paycheck first on needs

These are your regular expenses or essentials which you need for survival. 50% of your after-tax income will pay for bills such as rent, groceries, insurance, gas, electricity, and some debt payments. If your needs exceed 50%, you can review your spending, such as looking for a cheaper electricity provider or scaling down your grocery bill.

Commit 20% to savings and investing goals

After allocating 50% of your money to your needs, you can now work on your financial targets. This is where you stash away money for your savings goals, including contributing to your 401k, investing in shares, and paying any outstanding debts.

It's also important to build an emergency fund that should cover at least three to six months of your living expenses. This means you will not have a financial crisis if your car suddenly breaks down or you lose your job.

Enjoy some of your money by properly budgeting it from the start.

Set aside the rest of 30% towards your wants

In general, 30% of your budget is fun money which you can enjoy without feeling guilty. These tend to be nonessential things such as entertainment, shopping, eating out, and vacation. You can also make some upgrades to your house or car if you want.

When setting up your 50-30-20 budget, ensure you have determined your after-tax income to ensure the budget can sustain you from month to month. Your after-tax income or disposable income is your gross income, less all federal, state, and withholding taxes. The disposable income should help you pay for your basic needs, wants, and savings.

Given that you put in many hours earning your paycheck, it's for your own good to ensure you spend it wisely. When you stick to the 50-30-20 budget, you will gradually adopt good spending habits, including tracking your spending, removing unnecessary expenses, managing debts and planning for your retirement. This is not to assume it's going to be easy when you think of giving up your favorite subscription if it comes to that. This can be a step-by-step process until it becomes a financial principle you live by every time you plan your paycheck.

Master your money!

Master your paycheck

Have you thought of automating your spending? This was popularized by financial guru Dave Ramsey - no, not the chef. It involves paying off your smallest debt first and then working your way to the largest debt.

In a nutshell...

Make your monthly minimum payments on each of your debts

Make extra payments on the smallest debt

Once paid off, move on to the next smallest debt ending with the largest debt.

The largest benefit for this method is that it works by just modifying your behavior. The small wins are great motivators to keep you going until you've cleared out all your debts. This is my personal favorite.

The largest disadvantage would be that this method can cost you a lot more money in interest fees since it only takes the balance into account. Paying off your debt with the heaviest rates quicker allows you eventually put more money towards the principal of their loans.

In a nutshell...

Make your monthly minimum payments on each of your debts

Make extra payments on the debt with the highest interest rate

Once paid off, move on to the next debt with the highest interest rate ending with the smallest.

The largest benefit is that this method can save you a lot of money from interest fees.

The largest disadvantage is that it requires quite a bit of self-motivation to keep paying down the debt without seeing much progress.

Debt Consolidation

Debt consolidation is more about putting all your debt together so you can just make one payment as opposed to multiple payments. This saves interest and stress BUT requires another loan that pays off your secured or unsecured types of debt. Once consolidated using the loan you then just pay that one loan as opposed to several. This method may work for you or not. For example, if your credit score is already tapped out the interest rate you get for this debt consolidation loan may not make it feasible.

As always make sure to do your own research and always consult with debt and financial professionals to get more information on how to take control of your debt. These methods can be interchangable and factors liek personality and lifestyle would play a role in determining which works best for you. Hope this helps you in your path to financial freedom and being debt free.

What is a stablecoin in crypto?

If you're familiar with crypto, you've probably heard the term stablecoin. Even large establishments have been slowly embracing this new type of "money". If you're familiar with crypto, you've probably heard the term stablecoins thrown around. A stablecoin is a type of cryptocurrency that is pegged or priced to match against fiat money for example. "Fiat money" is a currency established by a country/government entity such as the US Dollar, Canadian Dollar, or Euro to name a few. Some examples of stablecoins are USDT, USDC, DAI, and UST. These are all types of cryptocurrencies meant to match the US Dollar, basically 1UST = 1USD. The "stable" comes from the non-volatility of this coin's price compared to other cryptocurrencies. At the time of writing, Bitcoin's price was at $63,501.50. A month ago it was $40,386.62. Thats a 57% increase! But what can come up, can almost surely come down and this is the type of volatility that you won't get with stablecoins.

How do they work?

There are 3 ways of how stablecoins can mimic or match their price against fiat currency. Fiat-Collateralized, are backed by the underlying government currency. These types of stablecoins are more central in nature meaning there is a central or a single controlling entity that handles these types of coins. Crypto-Collateralized, which are stablecoins collateralized against other cryptocurrencies. These are generally more decentralized (no single entity in control) and often over collateralized to take into account the volatility of the cryptocurrencies its collateralized from. Algorithmic, are stablecoins that rely on "smart contracts" or software/code to maintain its stability. These are oversimplifications of these and theres so much more going behind the scenes. Just know that these are meant to reduce their volatility compared to other cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum and keep a 1:1 match between fiat prices and their own.

What can I do with them and why use them?

The most straightforward use of stablecoins today is to purchase other coins such as Bitcoin, or Ethereum. Another is global remittance. In the old days, you'd have to convert your countries currency into the receiving parties currency. A bank visit or multiple pieces of info such as routing#, account#, etc... are normally required with fees and time delays factored into the entire process. Now you can send them UST using an app at little to no cost which they can then receive within minutes. From there, they can then do the conversion to fiat money themselves. Easy, fast and cheap! Another example, as a business, accepting stablecoins for your products and services can save you from fees from traditional payment processors. Ask any retailer, these can be huge.

Next steps

If you're thinking about getting started with cryptocurrency, but worried about the price swings and volatility, then stablecoins is the way to go. Please note there is always risk in dealing with cryptocurrencies. Some are much smaller than others but always DYOR (Do Your Own Research). Who hasn't got enough of them? The hits just keep on coming. Bills are a type of debt that needs to be paid. Sometimes we have enough to pay some bills but not all and an even worse scenario of those are bills we can't even afford to pay. Nobody likes doing it but we all have to pay them somehow. Here are some ways to stay sane amongst this eternal onslaught.

I like to classify debts and bills into 2 categories: priority and non-priority.

Priority bills

Some examples of priority bills and debts are:

rent/mortgage and home secured loans

utilities (gas, electric, and water)

tax (council, income)

court fines

child support

government related

These are considered a priority because if you don't pay these bills some very bad things can happen. Not paying your rent/mortgage can lead to evictions. Not paying utilities can get your electricity cut off...no Wi-Fi, can you imagine? Don't pay taxes, or court fines, well that can lead you to prison. Even a simple unpaid parking ticket can give you problems and escalate rather quickly.

Non-priority bills

Failing to pay non-priority bills tend to be less serious but can still result in some pretty bad consequences. These consequences can be court cases, credit impact, and bankruptcy to name a few.

Some examples of non-priority bills and debts are:

credit cards

unsecured bank loans

family/friend loans

payday loans

catalogue debt.

It's important to note that non-priority doesn't mean "ignore", it just simply means they should be paid after the priority bills are settled. We are all different people and some non-priority items for me may be a priority for you or vice versa. In these cases, you should treat them as such.

Can you pay my bills? Can you pay my...

Take control

Now that you have your bills sorted out you can start prioritizing their payments. Start with your priority bills then when that is under control move on to the non-priority. Good luck and know that what is most important is that you are organized, focused and persistent on paying off your debt.

What are the 3 principles of personal finance?

Personal finance includes all facets of money from budgeting, banking and savings and one that we are all surely aware of - spending.

Personal Finance

Getting Started

Savings

Carlo

Personal finance is the management of ones own or family's finances. This includes all facets of money from budgeting, banking and savings and one that we are all surely aware of - spending. In regards to investing, this also includes assessing risks and life planning.

Success in personal finance is progression, not perfection. Good habits over time will get you to where you want to be as opposed to a sudden and dramatic change.

There are numerous books and articles written in regards to personal finance and you could easily spend a lot of time reading and researching them. Some are great, others are motivational and a small subset is actual and actionable information.

Personal finance is simple. In this article I'll be talking about 3 basic personal finance principles. These are IMHO the most important and a good starting point for anyone to get into these good habits of managing finances.

Spend less than what you earn

Make your money work for you

Preparation is key

Let's get into each one and add a bit more detail.

Spend less than what you earn

This is the most important one and sometimes the most difficult one to do. If you have kids this is good one to teach early! It's hard to realize how much we're spending especially when there are a lot of little expenses here and there. All those little expenses, such as coffee, lunch outs, shopping, will add up over time and before you know you could be way over what you're expecting. So how do you get this started?

First, take time to actually see how much money is coming in or how much you are actually earning. Once you have a good idea how much you earn, you should create a spending budget/rule next. A good one that I personally use is the 50/30/20 rule. 50% for living and necessary expenses, 30% for nice to haves such as luxury items, entertainment, and 20% for savings.

Life happens and its stressful enough to have to worry about money as well. These 2 steps alone will help you stay in control of your financial situation.

Passive income - minimal effort required.

Make your money work for you

Making your money work for you is basically figuring out a way to automate your earnings that require little to no effort. In other words, passive income. Some passive income examples include investments, rental income and just about any business activity in where you do not need to materially participate.

Here are some ideas to get you started right away.

Index Funds or ETFs - An index fund is basically a collection of stocks designed to track a market index, like the S&P 500 (Standard and Poor's 500). An ETF (Exchange-Traded Fund) is a collection of stocks as well along with other assets such as bonds. Both offer diversification which lowers risk, and offers lower fees and taxes. These are hands-off investments so it can be considered truly passive income. Just sit back and watch the returns pour in over time. Check out StockPile or RobinHood to get started easily.

REITs - A REIT, or Real Estate Investment Trust, typically invests in income-producing real estate or high-interest debt service so they tend to pay generous dividends. Its easy to get started and you can buy and sell pretty easily and benefit from the diversification. These can be a bit more pricey to get started and could be subject to actual real estate market trends. Check out FundRise or Modiv to get started.

P2P Lending - P2P or Peer to Peer Lending is basically lending money to individuals using platforms such as Prosper or Lending Club. I do this myself and depending on the platform can be pretty hands-off. Returns at the time of writing this article can range from 6-10% but carry a certain degree of risk. The higher the return the larger the risk. Pay close attention when picking and choosing borrowers or loan requests.

Vehicle Advertising - if you have a car and dont mind a little advertisements on it you can make a decent amount of change just by driving around. Check out StickerRide or Wrapify. Note that payments vary and are based on the car you drive, location, and distance.

Answer Surveys - there are numerous websites that pay you to take survey. While this option takes up time the effort is very minimal. Check out Swagbucks or InboxDollars to get started right away.

Stock Photos - If you're a photographer you can monetize your photos through sites like ShutterStock or iStockPhoto. You basically sell your rights to your photographs so that businesses and brands can use them for their own purposes.

These are a few ideas to get started. The most important thing for me when creating this list was a low time investment for some passive returns.

Preparation is key

Life happens and we need to be prepared for any large expenses that may come about. Emergency savings protects you from financial emergencies such as job loss, long-term illness and unforeseen home or car repairs to name a few. The COVID-19 shutdown was a great example of how important it is to have such an emergency fund.

The size of an emergency find varies based on lifestyle, monthly income and costs as well as dependents. A good rule of thumb is to put away at least 3 to 6 months work of expenses. This amount seems daunting but a good way to start his is to put a small amount away each time you get paid to build up to that goal. This would be from the 20% of the budget/spending rule I mentioned earlier in this article.

Once you've established how to build such a fund you need to decide where to hold it. A good place to hold such a fund would be an interest-earning savings account, or money market account. These accounts should be accessible easily without taxes or penalties. This is the main reason why mutual funds, IRA's, Stocks, or other asset account types may not be suitable as your funds may lose value if the funds are accessed quickly.

The time to start is now!

Start Now!

It's never too late to get things started and the best time is now. Honestly, thats the most difficult process. Planning is a vital step but don't get stuck there. The key is action and the rubber needs to meet the road. Good luck and always continue learning, I sure am!
